DU Opens WHAC Play With 130-50 Rout of Mustangs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Seniors Alex Law and Tiesha Stokes led the charge as the Panthers scored early and often on their way to a record-setting win over Marygrove College Wednesday night. The Panthers and the Mustangs met in their 2015-16 WHAC opener, and DU came prepared to start the conference season fast as they scored the first 18 points of the game on the way to a 130-50 victory.

The Panthers started their scoring as Molly Babbs fed Stokes for an easy layin to give DU the 2-0 lead. This was followed by a Law made three-pointer and then followed closely with a Stokes put back following a Panther missed shot to give Davenport the 7-0 edge. Law would add another three-pointer and a pair of free throws while Chri Carter scored on a fast break layup as the Panthers went up 14-0. Law would then assist on a Mallory Sewell layup and Amanda Merz would steal a Mustang pass and complete the basket on the opposite end to give DU the commanding 18-0 lead as the Panthers ran away with the game.

DU would go on to carry a 67-11 halftime edge as the Panthers shot 52.1% from the floor while holding Marygrove to shooting just 9.7%. Law scored 20 points in the half to lead all scorers as she shot 4-for-7 from behind the arc. The Panthers would carry this edge into the second half as they took a 20-point edge in the third quarter and followed with a four-point margin in quarter number four to set a new Davenport University school record with an 80-point victory.

The Panthers were again led in the second half by Law as she totaled 16 points to bring her game total to 36 while tying the DU school record with eight three-point shots made (8-14) in the game. Stokes added to the DU lead as she recorded a double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead a Panther team that tied another school record with 74 rebounds as a team.

Head Coach Robyn Scherr-Wells commented on her team's dominant performance, "I'm proud of our girls and the way they came out and locked in on defense and made some shots early in the game. It was nice to see us get out and score a lot of points".

The Panthers would see seven scorers reach double-digits in scoring to fuel a Panther attack that broke the previous school record of 120 points scored with a 130-point performance as a team.
