Madonna Pulls Off Shocker in WHAC Quarterfinals

DU falls to 15-2-2 overall and shut out for second time this season

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team entered the WHAC Tournament as the top seed but could not get out of the quarterfinals after a 1-0 loss to eighth-seed Madonna on Saturday night. The Panthers were shutout for the first time since their first game of the season which was also their last loss back on August 21.

The Panthers (15-2-2) could not generate enough offense as the Crusaders elected to play back and pack 11 guys in hopes of keeping it close. Madonna (9-5-5) needed just one scoring chance to find the back of the net and they did in the 76th minute. Colin Wilden camped out in front of the net on a cross into the box from the right goal line and put it home for his third goal of the season.

Davenport had six shots on goal as Marcel Schmid turned away all of them including a couple of fantastic saves. The Crusaders had three shots on goal but just one in the second half which was the winning goal. The Panthers will now set their sights on defending their national championship beginning on Nov. 21 in the NAIA Tournament. Davenport will be in the field after winning the WHAC regular season.
