DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - The Panthers continued their play in the NAIA National Tournament Wednesday evening as they took on MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.). DU saw a back and forth match with the Pioneers as each team saw scoring chances that required great play from the opposing keeper to maintain a tied match. The Pioneers were able to strike first as a goal in the 84
th minute of the match proved to be the deciding factor and ended the season for DU in a hard fought match by a 1-0 result.
The Panthers and Pioneers battled to a scoreless tie at the break as MidAmerica Nazarene held a 9-7 advantage in shots. DU saw a great chance come from
Jake Love in the 23
rd minute that was turned away by Pioneer goal keeper Juan Pablo Riesco and another chance by Love in the 40
th that sailed just wide.
The Panthers kept battling into the second half as they looked to secure their victory. DU would maintain their 0-0 tie as goal keeper
Aaron Orban continued to play stout for the Panthers would multiple diving saves that turned away Pioneer scoring opportunities. The Panthers would find themselves with a breakaway chance in the 55
th minute as
TJ Ifaturoti fed a beautiful pass to
Manny Gorh that left Gorh inside the box and behind the keeper, but a Pioneer defender came in with a great hustle play that turn Gorh's shot aside.
The teams would find themselves in the 0-0 tie as the clock wound down under 10 minutes before the Pioneers put a rush onto the DU defense starting with a shot by Stephane Philippe that was saved by Orban. The Pioneers then gained control of the ball and Eduardo Heringer struck a ball from the top of the box that beat Orban to the right corner, putting the score at 1-0.
The final rush for the Panthers fell short as their national tournament run ended in the quarterfinals. Sophomore keeper
Aaron Orban finished the game with seven saves while Pioneer keeper Juan Pablo Riesco totaled one save. The Panthers and Pioneers would finish the match with 16 shots each.
