Box Score 2 The men's Division II hockey team saw a win streak coming to an end on Friday but started a new one against a talented Grand Valley State team on Saturday. The Panthers (10-7) fell 4-2 at Patterson Ice Center on Friday snapping an eight-game win streak and turned around the next day for a 4-3 win over the Lakers at Georgetown Ice Arena against the second-ranked team in the Central Region.
The Lakers scored the first two goals on Friday including a power play goal to start things by Michael Bishop in the first period. Collin Finkhouse scored just over one minute into the second period from Thomas Luzynski and Bishop. Zac Bodziak trimmed the lead to 2-1 at 3:59 of the second from
Donald Sund and
Daniel Swink. Spencer Godin answered for GVSU 33 seconds later to extend the lead back to two from Troy Marrett and Luzynski.
Alex Stewart from Bodziak on the power play midway through the third once again made it a one-goal game. The Lakers scored the final goal however at 12:52 as Finkhouse got assists from Godin and Bishop. Spencer Craig made 26 saves for GVSU while
Christian Thompson had 28 saves in defeat for DU.
The Panthers scored first on Saturday as
Jake Otto notched his fourth of the season from Sund and
Branden Burton. Austin Koleski, Ian Hamilton and Tommy Carey gave the Lakers a 3-1 lead midway through the second. The Panthers came storming back as
Trevor Murray, Bodziak and Burton reeled off goals for the comeback win.
Zac Smith got his first win of the season in net making 27 saves.
"I am really proud of my boys tonight," said head coach
Chris Green. "They played awesome and finished the game and first half of the season on a high note. We played tough, smart and fast and committed to playoff-type hockey which is a great sign moving forward."
