No. 2 Panthers Use 24-4 First-Half Run to Down Blue Devils

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Kayleigh VanKeulen had a perfect evening of 4-for-4 from the field, 3-for-3 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 for 13 points to lead the No. 2 Davenport women's basketball team to an 88-52 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory at the Student Center Wednesday night.
 
The Panthers (23-0, 17-0 WHAC) remain three games ahead of Madonna in the conference standings with five remaining in the regular-season. The Crusaders broke the tie for second with Siena Heights by defeating the Saints in Livonia.
 
Daina Grazulis also had a perfect day on the floor by hitting all six of her field goals for a dozen points. Chri Carter also had 12 points to reach double figures for the first time since her career-night of 22 at Marygrove one month ago. Tiesha Stokes rounded out the Panthers in double digits with 11 points.
 
Altogether, the Panthers shot 56.1 percent from the field and had 17 free throws on 24 attempts. Defensively, they held the Blue Devils (10-11, 8-9 WHAC) to 40.0 percent and forced 30 turnovers.
 
Allison Kitchen led the effort for Lawrence Tech, tallying 14 points including six of the Blue Devils 14 free throws.
 
Davenport edged Lawrence Tech in the rebounding department 33-29. Grazulis led the Panthers with six.
 
The Panthers never trailed throughout the contest and had started out with an 8-2 lead five minutes into the contest. Davenport started to run away with the lead during a 24-4 run in a 10-minute span during the first half.
 
VanKeulen had all of her 13 points in the first half and helped steered the Panthers to a 54-24 lead at the break. DU had caused 21 turnovers on Lawrence Tech during the opening period.
 
Davenport hits the road for the next two contests starting with Northwestern Ohio Saturday at 1 p.m.
