GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport women's tennis team entered the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament as the number two seed in the tournament. The Panthers opened the tournament with a 5-0 win over Concordia before they beat Aquinas in the semifinals of the tournament, 5-3. Davenport will now face Northwestern Ohio in the WHAC Championship match on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
In the Panthers first match of the day against Concordia, Davenport took control in the early going as
Alyssa Fuentes and
Puck Luttikhuis took doubles No. 1, 8-2, while
Emily Spiech and
Marcie Kooyers grabbed an 8-0 win at doubles No. 2. In the third doubles match,
Bridget Barrett and Montserrat also grabbed an 8-2 win to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead after doubles.
Davenport only needed two points heading into singles, where
Emily Spiech won 6-2, 6-0 at singles No. 3 and
Bridget Barrett grabbed the other point for DU with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
In the second match of the day, Aquinas got off to a strong start as they took two of the three doubles matches. Fuentes and Luttikhuis got the only doubles win with an 8-3 win at doubles No. 1. In singles, Davenport was able to take the first two singles matches to take a 3-2 lead. After the Saints took singles No. 3, Davenport took the next two singles matches to win 5-3.
The Panthers will face Northwestern Ohio in the WHAC Championship on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
