Tennis Teams Sweep Crosstown Rival Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport tennis teams took on crosstown rival Cornerstone on Wednesday night. The women were playing their second match in as many days as they beat the Golden Eagles, 9-0, while the men's team started their week with an 8-1 win over Cornerstone. The women will return to action on Saturday as they host Huntington at 1 p.m., while the men will face Spring Arbor next Thursday at 5 p.m.

Facing their second crosstown rival in as many days, the women's team got off to a strong start winning all three doubles matches and the Panthers only dropped a total of three games throughout the three doubles matches. Davenport did not let up in singles as they won each match in straight sets, and DU only lost four games throughout the entire singles portion of the match, en route to 9-0 win over Cornerstone.

The men's team returned to action this week looking to bounce back from their loss to Northwestern Ohio over the weekend. In doubles, Davenport was able to take early control of the match as they took all three point in doubles, as Juan-Philip van Antwerpen and Kevin Slagh gave the Panthers momentum heading into singles after they came from behind to win double two. The Panthers pulled in away in singles winning five of the six matched in singles, all in straight sets, as Davenport went on to beat Cornerstone, 8-1.

The women will conclude their three match week on Saturday against Huntington (Ind.) at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex at 1 p.m. The men's team will be off until next Thursday when they host Spring Arbor (Mich.) on Thursday at 5 p.m.
