GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport football team rolled to a 32-0 win on Saturday at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex over University of Faith. The Panthers and Glory Eagles played a contest that is not viewed as countable by the NAIA, therefore official stats and a win will not count towards any NAIA rankings or national stat leaders for Davenport.
The team jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a safety as University of Faith snapped the ball over their punter's head through the back of the end zone in the opening 2:32. The only other score of the first half came with 4:42 left in the second quarter as
Herman Brunis caught a four-yard fade route in the corner of the end zone from
Hunter Krause. Davenport led 9-0 at halftime and gained 154 yards including 91 on the ground.
In the second half, Davenport showed more life as they scored on their first possession driving 86 yards in 10 plays.
Rashaun O'Neal capped off the drive with a 40-yard touchdown run up the middle making men miss along the way. After a Glory Eagle punt on their next drive, DU again marched into the end zone on a 10-play, 50-yard drive using 4:48. Krause threw his second TD of the game this time on a screen pass to
Keion Powers who motored down the home sideline for a 23-yard score and a 22-0 lead after a missed PAT.
Patrick Gregory connected on a 21-yard field goal with 10:00 left in the fourth to advance the lead to 25-0 after a 62-yard drive lasting 3:01. The final score of the game came with 3:59 to play as
T.J. Douglas returned an interception 33 yards. Douglas also had a solid outing with eight tackles and a tackle for loss.
Brent Showers also tied for the team lead with eight tackles. The DU defense recorded nine tackles for loss including five sacks for a loss of 36 yards.
Chris Watkins led the rushing attack with 14 carries for 98 yards. O'Neal finished with 15 carries for 78 yards and a TD. Krause went 12-of-24 for 173 yards and 2 TD's in the air. University of Faith managed just 109 total yards and were 1-of-17 on third and fourth down for the contest.
