GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The eighth-ranked Davenport women's basketball team overcame a sluggish first half to cruise to a 79-53 win over Aquinas on Saturday at the Student Center. The Panthers improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference behind a dominant second half and in particular a third quarter in which they outscored the Saints 20-5 after a tie score at the half of 32-32. DU beat the Saints for the 21st straight time but early it looked like Aquinas might end that long streak.
Aquinas led 18-12 after the first quarter and shot 40 percent from the field and 6-of-6 at the free throw stripe. The Saints made just 12 field goals for the final three quarters however and shot just 2-of-14 in the third quarter. Davenport shot 53.3 percent from the floor in the third quarter while hitting three triples. DU then shot 56.3 percent (9-of-16) in the fourth quarter going 5-of-6 from the arc.
The Panthers connected on a season-high 12 three-pointers and finished shooting 54.5 percent from deep range. The DU bench showed up huge with 37 points as
Courtney Murphy scored 13 in 17 minutes and made three bombs.
Emily Severn scored 10 points and grabbed three boards in 20 minutes.
Lauren Brower also had 10 points and two assists in 25 minutes. The glass belonged to DU to the tune of 48-29 which was the largest margin this season.
