DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – The Panthers advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA national tournament after defeating Midland University 2-0 tonight. Davenport took 40 minutes before they got on the board, but once they did it was a one sided match in favor of the Panthers. This is the third straight season that the team has advanced to the quarterfinals in the NAIA national tournament and are now 7-3-2 all time in the tournament.
The first half started off very physical and whistle heavy towards the Panthers. Davenport was called for the opening three fouls and were given a yellow card with 20:33 left in the half. Midland matched the physicality put forth by the Panthers for a while, both teams only combined for three shots during the opening 39 minutes of play. Senior T.J. Ifaturoti netted the game winning goal with 5:22 remaining in the first half.
Jordan Van Oostenbrugge sent a beautiful through ball on the ground and Ifaturoti took care of the rest as he fired it into the lower right side of the net. The Panthers went into the half leading 1-0 over the Warriors.
Davenport had a good defensive stand early on in the second half as they defended against three straight corner kicks by the Warriors about ten minutes into the half.
Brogan Shrimpton and
Tyler Collishaw worked together to convert on a free kick with 33:32 left in the half. Shrimpton headed in a goal off of a ball that was sent into the box by Collishaw from a free kick that was about 30 yards out. Davenport continued to put on pressure during the rest of the half and shut out the Warriors after 90 minutes of play.
This was the first meeting between the Panthers and the Warriors. Ifaturoti scored his 52
nd career goal and 18
th career game winning goal. He is ranked second in program history for goals scored in a career, only Dzenan Catic is ahead of him with 63 goals. Shrimpton scored his ninth goal of the season, which is tied for third on the team this season with
Jake Love.
Aaron Orban notched his 20
th career shutout tonight and is now 48-6-6 in goal for his career.
Davenport will take on William Carey (Miss.) tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals. This will be the first time that the Panthers play William Carey in men's soccer. William Carey had an upset against Oklahoma Wesleyan earlier today, they tied 1-1 and advanced on penalty kicks (9-8).
