Panthers Can't Overcome First Half Deficit in 35-6 Loss to #4 Saint Francis (Ind.)

DU finishes their first season with a 6-5 record

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University football team wrapped up their first season on Saturday afternoon with a 35-6 loss against #4 Saint Francis (Ind.). The Panthers concluded their season at 6-5 overall and struggled in the first half against the Cougars falling behind 28-0 at halftime. Saint Francis scored once in the first quarter and tacked on 21 more points in the second quarter to put Davenport in a big hole.

Aaron Harris scored on a 3-yard touchdown rush at 8:01 of the first quarter on the Cougars' first possession of the game. They traveled 75 yards in nine plays and took 3:32 off the clock. Nick Ferrer threw for 61 yards on the drive before Harris carried it across the goal line. Davenport had possession at the end of the first and into the second quarter on a 10-play drive but it was halted at the USF 22 after not converting on 4th-and-2. The Cougars took advantage on the next play with a 78-yard strike from Ferrer to Seth Coate. Coate did a double move and got behind the secondary and rumbled 45 yards after the catch for a 14-0 lead at the 13:25 mark.

Davenport again sustained a drive of 13 plays and covered 41 yards but on 3rd-and-10 from the USF 21, Hunter Krause was intercepted at the goal line by Jerrell Holman who returned it two yards. USF took control of the game on the ensuing possession as they marched 98 yards in 12 plays taking 4:44 off the clock. The Cougars converted two third downs and faced a 4th-and-9 at the DU 16. A defensive holding penalty kept the drive alive and Ferrer tossed his second TD from eight yards to Jason Nicodemus on a wheel route with 2:34 left until the half.

Krause was picked off by Marcus Stepp at the DU 31 and Stepp took the ball 20 yards to the DU 11 with 2:11 left in the second. That turnover led to a Ferrer to Akeim Kelsaw five-yard touchdown with 28 seconds left for a 28-0 lead. The Cougars had 261 yards in the first half including 190 through the air. Davenport gained 111 yards in the first half including 53 yards on the ground.

The Panthers played the Cougars pretty even in the second half and got on the board on the second possession of the third quarter. Kyler Shurlow rushed in from two yards on the 11th play of the drive that lasted 5:46 and the blocked extra point made it 28-6. The Cougars scored again on their second drive of the fourth quarter with 5:56 to play as Coate and Ferrer hooked up on a 23-yard TD. Ferrer finished with four TD's and 262 passing yards for USF. William Gist rushed for 87 tough yards on 30 carries for DU. Eric Dunten made 18 tackles for the Cougars while Jon Simmons led DU with eight stops and a forced fumble.
