GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 7 Davenport women's basketball team has set up a big showdown with No. 1 Saint Francis (Ill.) tomorrow at 7 p.m. after an 85-51 win over Bethel (Ind.) on Thursday night in the first game of the DU Holiday Classic. The Fighting Saints claimed a win over Cornerstone despite trailing at halftime and the 12-0 squad will face 14-1 Davenport in the marquee matchup.
First things first was taking care of the Bethel Pilots who put up a good fight for three quarters before the Panthers depth wore them down. Davenport outscored their opponent 26-8 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win. Davenport never trailed in the contest and led for all but 44 seconds.
Davenport shot 49.3 percent (37-of-75) from the floor and went to the line just five times. In the final quarter, Davenport shot 61.1 percent (11-of-18) in the quarter while Bethel went 2-of-13 for 15.4 percent. 14 different players scored for the Panthers with three players in double figures.
Emily Severn and
Jenna Falkenberg each led the team with 12 points. Falkenberg also recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds and needed just 15 minutes to accomplish it. Severn went 5-of-8 from the floor and also grabbed five rebounds in 23 minutes. As a team, DU finished with 10 blocked shots and Falkenberg had four of them.
Bethel coughed it up 30 times as Davenport outscored them 36-6 in points off turnovers. The Panthers also got 10 points from
Courtney Murphy who also had three rebounds and three assists.
Chri Carter recorded six steals to set a new career-high and added four assists in 21 minutes.Â
