Panthers Dial Long Distance in 89-70 Win over Concordia

Courtney Murphy made 5-of-10 behind the arc and finished with 17 points

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball team was shooting 33.2 percent from behind the arc this season entering a key matchup against Concordia. That changed in a big way on Wednesday as the Panthers shot 54.2 percent (13-of-24) from deep in an 89-70 win over the Cardinals. Davenport moved to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference while Concordia fell to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

The Panthers started off hot going 3-of-3 from the arc in the first quarter and built a 17-11 lead. The team trailed by a point but finished off the quarter on a 7-0 run. DU converted the first basket of the second quarter on a Courtney Murphy triple to extend the run to 10-0 before the Cardinals got a basket. The Cardinals scored the next seven points to make it 20-18 on a Brianna Rowe fast-break layup. Murphy's second three-pointer of the quarter made it 25-20 and then Mallory Sewell scored back-to-back layups for a 29-20 lead with 6:13 left until halftime. Concordia again cut into the lead and trailed 31-28 with 3:31 left in the quarter. Concordia got within one but could not gain the lead as DU led 37-34 at the break.

The third quarter was a major statement for the Panthers as they outscored the Cardinals, 25-14, to lead by 14 with 10 minutes remaining. DU shot 47.1 percent in the third while Concordia was 23.5 percent from the floor. The team put it on cruise control in the fourth quarter and pulled away for the 19-point margin. The Panthers once again led the battle on the glass (52-44) marking the 10th straight game to start the season. The Panthers also won their 10th straight game against Concordia and improved to 30-2 all time against the Ann Arbor based university.

Murphy led DU with 17 points and connected on 5-of-10 behind the long line. She finished 6-of-14 overall from the floor and grabbed three rebounds. Chri Carter scored 13 points going 9-of-11 at the free throw line. She added five rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes. Jenna Falkenberg played a strong aggressive game before fouling out in 12 minutes. In those minutes, she scored 10 points with eight rebounds and three blocked shots. The DU depth once again was evident as they outscored the Cardinal bench 35-11 for the game. DU finished shooting 47 percent (31-of-66) from the floor while Concordia was 35.1 percent (27-of-77).
