Panthers Drop Pair to Miami

DU will now look forward to CCWHA Playoffs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport women's hockey team ran into a buzzsaw this weekend against No. 3 Miami (Ohio) at Patterson Ice Center. The final regular season series proved to be a pair of lopsided wins for the RedHawks by scores of 6-1 and 7-0.

The Panthers got the first goal of the series on Saturday but then saw the RedHawks score 13 straight goals. Lexie Boydston gave Davenport a 1-0 lead at 12:23 of the first period unassisted and that was the offense for the Panthers. Miami got a pair of goals and one assist from Jessica Gould. Alyssa Visalli scored the game-winning goal at 3:23 of the second period from Kathleen Baldwin. Katelyn Augustine scored on the power play at 18:10 of the second from Ellen Chiligiris and Becca Senden. Miami outshot Davenport, 47-13, while the Panthers could not convert on six power play chances.

"This was a tough loss both standings and momentum-wise for us," said head coach Tom Hofman. "It was an emotional night with the honoring of the senior class, and sometimes that emotion causes us to lose focus. We still need to do a better job of forechecking throughout the game to force their decision making. We came out and executed well in first, but still need to drive hard and get those hard-nosed goals. Our only goal tomorrow is to gain that winning momentum back going into playoffs."

The Sunday morning contest did not provide a lot of confidence heading into the CCWHA playoffs next week. Miami scored five times in the first period against Dawn Salo who was replaced by Karley Ferguson for the final 40 minutes. The RedHawks had 25 shots on goal in the first as five different players scored for MU. Ireland Mooney scored her second of the game in the second and Rachael Booth added a power play goal in the third. Ferguson stopped 29 shots in the final two periods for Davenport.

"We had a tough time getting anything going today," said Hofman. "Our angles were off and we saw a lot of miscommunication on the ice. I feel that Miami was the best team we've faced all season, so we know what it will take to compete in the CCWHA playoffs next week. We didn't come close to playing to our potential and we are capable of so much more. We've got to find our game back this week and bring it to the postseason."
