MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Nine different Panthers crossed the try line in Saturday's 106-10 win over the University of Minnesota.
Hunter Moreland,
Melissa Francis and
Danielle Ordway recorded hat tricks, scoring three tries apiece to lead the Panthers to victory.
The backline for the Panthers really turned it on in the first half, scoring five of the nine Davenport tries, from
Courtenay Tafel,
Melissa Francis,
Danielle Ordway, and
Ashlee Byrge. Just minutes into the game, Tafel scored the first try of the game, powering through the defense from the wing. This first try got the scoring momentum going and it wouldn't stop for the next 80 minutes.
Hannah Tennant, who went 5-for-8 with conversions, added a few more points of her own when she kicked for points almost dead center from Minnesota penalties. Francis and Ordway got on the board next, followed by some forward action from
Brenna Donahue,
Brittany O'Dell and Moreland, who scored two tries in the first half.
Davenport continued to assert dominance in the second half with a quick score from Francis, but Minnesota was able to take advantage of multiple penalties and put the Panthers on their heels, which allowed them to score their first points of the day. This didn't last long though, as they got back to their game and
Caren Brown was able to power through the Minnesota forwards for five. This score helped spark the rest of the team and four more scores came very quickly from Francis, Moreland, O'Dell and Ordway before Minnesota was able to score one last time in the match. Ordway was able to score one more time as well as set up
Madison Sparks for a try before the end of the game.
Head Coach
Greg Teliczan was happy with the win, but noted that this is only the beginning of a long road. "It was a good start, but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement. We were pretty bad in support play and weren't getting to the breakdown fast enough, which has been a problem for us all year." He continued by stressing the importance of fitness, especially in the 7's heavy spring season. "We need to get much more fit. I saw too much walking around that led to us being offside, which led to penalties where they we able to capitalize and score. If we did have one really great bright spot, it was our lineouts."
The Panthers look ahead to another Big Ten opponent in the University of Michigan on February 20 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
