DEARBORN, Mich. - The magical run of 22 straight wins by the men's Division I hockey team came to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 overtime loss at UM-Dearborn in the final of the GLCHL Tournament. The Wolverines had the luxury of hosting the tournament and entered as the No. 3 seed. The Panthers earned the top seed by winning the regular season. UM-Dearborn got to the finals with a 2-1 win over No. 2 seed Adrian. Davenport defeated Western Michigan 6-2 in their semifinal.
The Wolverines got the Panthers attention by scoring the first two goals. Gino Darin scored the only goal of the first at 15:27 from Kevin Bechard. Andrew Palushaj gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead at 6:57 of the second from Jeff McFarland.
The Panthers answered just eight seconds later as
Jordan Simmonds scored his 21st goal of the season from
Everett Thompson. DU evened it up at 16:47 as
Alex Hulford beat Nate Ferris on the backdoor for his 17th goal of the season from
Matt Ogden.
The Panthers fired 14 shots in the third but could not break the tie and the teams went into overtime. Unlike the regular season's five-minute overtime, this contest would last until someone scored. Ryan Kelly played the role of hero for UM-Dearborn with his unassisted goal at 6:30. The Panthers will now have a break and gear up for the ACHA DI National Tournament. DU will face Robert Morris (Ill.) on March 5 in Bensenville, Illinois.
