DU Advances to WHAC Tournament Semifinals with 75-50 Win over Cardinals

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Panthers showed their depth and dominance inside the paint Thursday as the DU front court carried the Panthers to a 75-50 win over Concordia University in the WHAC Tournament Quarterfinals. DU picked up their 25th win for the 11th straight season and advanced their overall record to 25-5.

The Cardinals made DU fight early in the game as the Panthers held a slight 25-22 lead with 8:09 left in the first half. The Panthers would find a spark and open up the game with a 12-2 run over the next five and a half minutes of the half and carried a 39-28 lead to the break. Senior center Kendra Cook led the Panthers with 10 points and four rebounds as DU went on to shoot 48.6% from the field as a team.

The second half saw the Panthers extend their lead to as many as 25 points as Mallory Sewell came alive to help fuel the DU inside attack. She would lead all Panthers with seven points in the second half on the way to a 13-point, six-rebound night. DU did not let Concordia climb within 12 points for the remainder of the game as 10 Panthers tallied a point in the second half.

DU went on to win the game on the glass by a 50-44 margin. Molly Babbs would fuel the Panthers with a team-high 12 rebounds and Emily Severn added a career-high nine. The Panthers outscored the Cardinals 50-28 in the paint and totaled 31 points off of the bench.

Lauren Brower aided this dominance from the Panthers with a 3-for-6 performance from behind the arc and 11 points to go along with three assists. Amanda Merz contributed with eight points and five rebounds as the Panthers ran away to their eighth straight win and their ninth-straight win over the Cardinals. DU will face Indiana Tech next in the WHAC Tournament Semifinals on February 27 at 1 p.m. in the DU Student Center.
