CHICAGO, Ill. - It looked like the men's Division II hockey team was going to make the trip to nationals on Sunday as they led 4-1 against Michigan State midway through the second period. Just when it appeared comfortable, the Spartans scored three straight goals to end the second and then scored the only goal of the third in a 5-4 upset of the third-seed Davenport at the Central Regional.
It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Panthers as their season ends at 21-10 overall.
Donald Sund scored in the first period for DU with assists by
Branden Burton and
Daniel Swink. Tyler Maloney scored 18 seconds later at 19:33 to tie it after 20 minutes.
Both teams scored three times in the second period as Davenport got goals from
Blake Damerow, Zac Bodziak and
Chris McRae. Swink assisted on two of the goals and the Bodziak marker came on the power play at 5:01. The Spartans did not fold and Will Badner got them back in the game at 8:41 from Edmund Meltzer and Michael Albosta.
Jacob Peacock scored at 17:20 for MSU and then Andrew Patzin's unassisted goal at 18:22 tied it up at 4-4. MSU held a 14-7 edge in shots in the final period and Tyler Van Acker scored the winner at 11:16 from Albosta and Maloney. The Panthers had two power play chances in the final six minutes of the game but could not get the equalizer.
