Panthers Overpower Siena Heights 19-4 in Home Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Panthers opened up at home Saturday afternoon with a matchup against Siena Heights University. DU had to battle the Saints early as the Saints scored the first goal of the game. The Panthers pulled away to an 8-2 halftime lead and extended their lead in the second half to double digits. DU would outscore the Saints 11-2 in the second half as they advanced their overall record to 3-1 and improved to 2-0 in the WHAC.

Siena scored first as they turned a free position shot into a 1-0 lead. DU responded with the next four goals to take control of the game. Hanna Bush got the Panthers on the board and assisted on a Brooke Knoll score with 24:57 remaining as DU took the 2-1 lead. Knoll would tally three more goals in the first half, including a score with two seconds remaining, as the Panthers pulled ahead to a six-goal advantage.

DU kept their offensive momentum going to start the second half with the first five goals as they extended their lead to 13-2. Bridget Zuidgeest scored just 38 seconds into the half to spark the DU attack in the second half. Amber Livingston would add to the Panther attack with three second half goals and Jessica Lemcke would tally three of her own as a part of her four-goal performance.Knoll would go on to lead DU with five goals and one assist. Tara Pluger recorded two goals and four assists while Bush totaled two goals and three assists.

The Panther defense was relentless all game as they caused 22 turnovers and recorded 40 ground balls. Sydney Gray led the DU defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Hannah Maroe added four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Samantha Powers (3-1) made the start in goal for DU and recorded four saves to take the decision. Alex Yates relieved Powers at the break and tallied one save in 30 minutes played.
