GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport women's tennis team capped off their recent 13-match win streak with a 5-1 win over Northwestern Ohio in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament championship on Saturday. The Panthers won their second tournament title (2012) in school history.
The Panthers staked themselves to a 3-0 lead after doubles needing just two singles wins to capture the title.
Alyssa Fuentes and
Puck Luttikhuis defeated Valeria Popko and Kate Bondarenko at one doubles (8-5).
Steph Ritson and
Anne Douwes won 8-4 at two doubles over Melena Lopez and Ana Lacerda. The tightest match was at three doubles where Davenport needed a tiebreak for a 9-8 (7-5) win.
Hannah Murphy and
Emily Spiech pulled it out over Raqual Marques and Xiomara Aguilar.
Marques got a point for the Racers at four singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ritson. Luttikhuis got a win at two singles over Popko (6-2, 6-4). Spiech clinched the win at five singles with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Lacerda.
