GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Junior attacker
Brooke Knoll sparked the Panthers in the second half as they pulled away from a 5-5 halftime stalemate with Aquinas College. Knoll went on to tie the DU single-game record with eight goals scored as the Panthers outscored the Saints 13-2 in the second half.
The Saints battled DU for the entire opening 30 minute period as the teams were tied 5-5 at the break. The Panthers could not find their offensive rhythm despite outshooting Aquinas 12-to-5 for the half.
Jessica Lemcke notched a pair of scores for the Panthers, including the game-tying goal on a
Hanna Bush assist.
The second half saw the DU offense come alive led by Knoll who scored seven second half goals while Bush added to the Panther attack with six second half points. DU scored 11 unanswered goals to run away from the Saints and their upset bid as DU improved its home record in 2016 to 4-0. The Panthers controlled the draw and possession of the ball all half as
Mariah Newton recorded a game-high six draw controls.
The Panthers improved to 9-1, 8-0 behind the play of their offense in the second half. Bush totaled nine points for the game on three goals and six assists. Lemcke totaled four goals while
Tara Pluger scored one goal and added four assists.Â
The Panther defense helped shut down the Saints offense by causing 23 turnovers and recording 30 ground balls.
Sydney Gray recorded five caused turnovers and Pluger totaled a game-high eight ground balls.
Alex Yates (1-0) earned her first career victory in goal by recording three saves after she relieved starter
Samantha Powers at the break.Â
