GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's soccer team turned in a very efficient match on Wednesday in a 5-1 win over previously unbeaten Spring Arbor University at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The No. 5 Panthers looked every bit one of the best teams in NAIA against a Cougar team who entered the match with a record of 5-0-1. Davenport picked up their fourth straight win moving to 5-1 overall and do so with a tempo and possession game that Spring Arbor could not match.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the 13th minute as
Jeppe Marquardsen converted a direct free kick from 18 yards straight on into the lower right corner around the human wall of Cougars. Just three minutes later,
TJ Ifaturoti scored his third of the season after an assist from
Tyler Collishaw. Ifaturoti created space on the left wing and delivered into the top right corner from 17 yards.
Davenport continued to push the pace in the 32nd minute with a goal by
Yovany Duran on the goal of the year for the team so far. Duran made a full sprint behind the play and took a pass from
Jake Love to connect on a diving header near the eight-yard box for his second of the season and a 3-0 halftime lead.
Spring Arbor began to start pushing their players up the field in order to try and get back into the match to start the second half. The Panthers countered with speed in transition and made it 4-0 in the 67th minute as Love scored his second of the season on a ball that he dribbled into the 20-yard area and beat backup goalkeeper Isiah Handspike to the lower left corner.
The match ended with the teams trading penalty kick goals. Collishaw was taken down in the box by Handspike and blasted his third of the season in the 70th minute. Morris Kamara then scored in the 71st minute on a hand-ball call by the DU defense. Davenport scored five goals on seven shots on goal. Spring Arbor had three shots on goal (6 total) as
Aaron Orban made two saves improving to 4-0 this season in goal for DU. Cobi Piper played the first half in goal for SAU allowing three goals with one save.
