GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The fifth-ranked Davenport men's soccer team traveled the short distance to Cornerstone University on Wednesday night and picked up a 2-1 win over the Golden Eagles. The Panthers (7-1-1, 1-0-1 WHAC) defeated Cornerstone for the fourth straight time and in the process picked up their first true road win of the season.
Jake Love got things started in the 10th minute with his third goal of the season with an assist from
Tyler Collishaw. The ball was played from the middle of the field to the left wing where Love took the ball and fired off the hands of CU keeper Dary Dewalt.
Cornerstone took advantage of a defensive miscue by Davenport in the 30th minute as Kevin Doornbos scored his sixth of the campaign without an assist.
The Panthers were outshot 7-5 in the first half and needed to pick up their offense in the second half. The team turned three shots onto the net in the final 45 minutes and the key shot actually came from the forehead of
Cam Cavanagh. He took a corner kick from
Jordan Van Oostenbrugge and scored his first of the season in the 78th minute for the game-winning goal.
Davenport finished the match with a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
Aaron Orban needed to make just one save on the evening in the goal for Davenport.
