GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was total domination for the Davenport women's basketball team on Wednesday in a 95-23 win over Marygrove. The Panthers set the school record for fewest points allowed in a game breaking the record of 27 points allowed back in March 2011. Davenport played 14 different ladies and each one of them scored at least one point. Marygrove shot just 16.1 percent (9-of-56) from the floor compared to 48.7 percent by the Panthers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
71 – The Davenport bench scored 71 of the team's 95 points while the Marygrove bench went a combined 0-of-4 from the floor and scored zero points.
30 – The Panthers went to the free throw line 30 times compared to just 3 attempts by the Mustangs.
68 – The Panthers grabbed 68 rebounds including 29 offensive boards. DU finished with 44 second-chance points in the contest.
19:10 – The Mustangs scored just seven points in the second half and those all came in a span of 50 seconds in the middle of the fourth quarter. That means that Davenport did not allow a point for 19:10 out of 20 minutes in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Davenport started the game on a 9-0 run before Marygrove scored at 5:39 on a jumper by Elisha Major. Breanna Thomas hit a three-pointer at 2:37 for the last points of the first quarter for the Mustangs as Davenport led 22-5. The Panthers moved the lead to 29-7 in the first four minutes of the second quarter. The Mustangs scored seven points in the final 3:09 of the quarter and made a basket as time expired. DU led 40-16 going into the locker room and the defense was just getting started. The Panthers then outscored their opponent, 28-0, in the third quarter to lead 68-16. Marygrove shot 0-of-10 from the floor and committed seven turnovers in the quarter. The scoreless drought for Marygrove ended with 5:13 left in the fourth quarter as Major scored seven points in a span of 50 seconds.
Davenport is now 21-2 overall and 15-0 in the WHAC. The Panthers also improved to 16-0 against the Mustangs and has scored over 90 points in the last five wins. Freshman
Jenna Falkenberg led DU with 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Michaela Faber went 5-of-6 from the floor and scored 11 points in just seven minutes.
Molly Babbs scored 10 points and grabbed eight boards in 15 minutes.
Amanda Merz scored 10 points and also added seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Ashley Cline scored 11 points in 16 minutes.
Kenzie Galloway scored seven points in 12 minutes.
