GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport opened their 2017-18 season with a weekend series against Midland University. The Panthers played both games at home and had two scrimmages underneath their belt. During both games Davenport was neck and neck with the Warriors, but just couldn't get those goals late in the game to get the win. The Panthers dropped both games to the Warriors.
Game 1 (Friday, September 29th)

HOW IT HAPPENED
-In the first period both teams were getting their feet underneath them and getting used to the speed of the game, since it was their first official game of the season. Midland struck first towards the end of the period, scoring a goal in the 18
th minute and took a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.
-The Panthers countered early to start the second period.
Jaiden Forrest scored a goal in the third minute and was assisted by
Emily Ellis and
Amanda Ballestero. The Warriors came back just a couple minutes later to score a goal and take a 2-1 lead. After another 10 minutes of play
Tori Dubuc, on an un-assisted effort, scored a goal to tie the game 2-2.
-Heading into the third period the game was tied 2-2, the Warriors changed that just 90 seconds into the period. Midland scored to take a 3-2 lead and held on for the remainder of the game.
-Both Forrest and Dubuc scored a goal.
-Ellis and Ballestero each assisted on one goal.
-
Dawn Salo played all 60 minutes in net and had 20 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Davenport had a phenomenal start to the second game of the series, scoring two goals in the opening six minutes of play.
Laken Kunz scored the initial goal of the game in the fourth minute and was assisted by
Lexie Boydston. Just under two minutes later
Courtney Mulligan scored a goal to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead, she was assisted by Ellis and Forrest.
-The Panthers had a 2-0 lead heading into the second period. Midland cut the lead down to one goal after scoring their first goal of the game in the seventh minute. The Warriors again found the back of the net in the sixteenth minute on an un-assisted effort. The teams went into the third period tied 2-2.
-The Warriors carried over momentum from the second period into the third period and scored two more un-answered goals. Midland held off the Davenport attacks for the remainder of the game, holding on to their 4-2 lead.
-Kunz and Mulligan scored one goal each.
-Ellis, Forrest and Boydston all tallied an assist.
-
Julia Gaynor was in the net for the entire game and had 22 saves.

Davenport gets some time to watch film and learn from the two loses before their next competition on October 14
th. The Panthers will be taking on Robert Morris University (Ill.) at home on the 14
th and 15
th of October.
