Panthers win rubber match with Purdue Northwest and advance in GLIAC Tournament

DU will now travel to No. 22 Northwood on Friday for a 1 p.m. start

CALEDONIA, Mich. - Purdue Northwest pulled off an upset four days ago in the regular season finale against the men's soccer team, but that would not happen again in the first match of the GLIAC Tournament. The Panthers advanced in the postseason to a semifinal date with Northwood on Friday at 1 p.m. after a 3-1 win over the Pride on Tuesday afternoon. The start was not ideal as Purdue Northwest scored at 21:15. Grant Ugarte scored his first of the season off a free kick by Renato Silva. Silva was 40 yards out and lifted the ball into the 18-yard box where Ugarte got a piece of it as goalkeeper Aaron Orban charged towards the ball and it deflected off his hands.

The tide turned quickly as Davenport answered just 1:46 later to tie it up. Senior Cam Cavanagh scored his second of the season off a deflection in close as he took the ball from Brayden Texer and drilled it just inside the crossbar. From that point, the Panthers looked like a different team and kept the pressure on the Pride throughout. It took about 40 minutes for the Panthers to break the tie and it came off a corner kick by Texer. He kicked the ball to the back post where Lasse Pico Kjeldsen headed it just over the goal line for his second goal of the season.

The Panthers wrapped it up at 84:31 when Brogan Shrimpton increased his season goal total to 17 on a breakaway from 15 yards to the lower right corner. Daire O'Riordan had the assist and fought for the ball near midfield making a great play to feed it ahead to Shrimpton who dribbled about 20 yards before taking the shot. It was a very physical match especially in the second half as five yellow cards were issued. Orban finished with three saves and has the decision in every match this season (10-6-1). Bradley Brack faced 13 shots on goal by the Panthers and made nine saves while a team save was also recorded.
