HOW IT HAPPENED
Northwood had complete control of the game in the first half, getting multiple opportunities to score the soccer ball. The Timberwolves succeeded on two opportunities, taking a two goal lead into halftime. Davenport had little to show offensively in the half, not recording a single shot on goal.
The Timberwolves started the second half right where they left off, scoring on a free kick just four minutes into the half to take a three goal lead. After a few offensive adjustments the Panthers found their groove. Skidmore lined up for a free kick and riffled one into the right side of the net to cut the deficit to two goals. A couple minutes later Skidmore crossed the ball into the box and Stone flicked the ball with her head over the hands of the goal keeper. Later on Zayan sent a ball on the ground past the defense, Varney was first to the ball. Varney took one touch and knocked the ball in with her left foot to the left side of the net to tie the game 3-3. Neither team was able to score down the stretch and overtime was needed to determine a winner. This was the fourth game out of the last five that Davenport went into overtime.
During the overtime period both teams had a couple opportunities to score. A header by Northwood in the box went wide with just under three minutes to go in the period. With the clock ticking down Davenport fired the ball down towards the Northwood goal. Zayan sprinted after the ball as fast as she could. Her and a Northwood player reached the ball at the same time and after both hitting the ball simultaneously it squirted out towards the Northwood goal. Zayan shot the ball as the announcer was counting down the final seconds and the ball rolled into the net as the clock hit one second. Panthers win!
