GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The addition of Davenport University to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has generated a chance to establish new rivalries. One of the newest opponents with potential to become a rival is nearby Grand Valley State University in Allendale. The men's and women's teams will play their first-ever basketball games in conference on Saturday, Dec. 2 at the DU Student Center. The women's contest will begin at 1 p.m. followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.

The highlight of the day will be a friendly free throw competition between DU President Dr. Richard Pappas and GVSU President Dr. Thomas Haas. The two will compete between the women and men's game as a way to encourage school spirit. The loser of the contest will have to wear the ball cap of the other institution during the men's game.

Other activities going on during the day include the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) sponsoring and raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The promotion of Make-A-Swish will be a chance for fans to make one area kid's dream come true. Make-a-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. There will be t-shirts on sale for $5 and cotton candy sold to raise money for Make-a-Wish. There will also be a Miracle Minute during both games during which cheerleaders will race through the crowd to collect money. Lastly, all DU fans are encouraged to wear black for a "Black Out" theme.
