MIDLAND, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team made history again on Sunday afternoon winning the GLIAC Tournament with a 1-0 win over No. 24 Saginaw Valley State on the campus of Northwood University. The Panthers in their first year of GLIAC competition captured the league tournament behind a goal at 42:45 from
Noah Fetterolf. He scored his second goal of the season with an assist from
Keagan Bailie. This duo not normally called upon to provide offense came up huge. Bailie kicked a long ball from distance back into the box after the Cardinals tried to clear downfield. Bailie's strike got to Fetterolf inside the 18-yard box and he half-volleyed it inside the right post. It was an unlikely hero who has played in 11 matches this season for a total of 219 minutes and last scored on October 6 at Tiffin.
The team was led in the tournament by all-tournament performers
Aaron Orban,
Cam Cavanagh,
Brogan Shrimpton and MVP
Stephen Carroll. The Panthers did a masterful of keeping the lead in the second half as the Cardinals threw everything they could at them. SVSU finished the match with 15 shots including six shots on goal as Orban saved all six shots including a few highlight reel saves. Davenport finished with six shots and four on goal. The match was highly physical as each team received three yellow cards. Davenport finishes their season with a 12-6-1 record. The Panthers are not eligible to advance to the NCAA Tournament due to being a provisional member as they move forward to permanent status in NCAA Division II.
