CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team got just enough offense in the second half on a balmy Sunday afternoon in a 2-0 victory over Northern Michigan in GLIAC action from Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The matchup grew interesting in the 20th minute as NMU goalkeeper Filippo Torelli was issued a red card for playing the ball with his hands outside the 18-yard box. The Wildcats were forced to play down a man for the rest of the match and Davenport controlled the tempo and possession throughout the final 70 minutes.
The Wildcats turned to backup keeper Brayden Wilinkski who made a few very nice saves to keep the match scoreless into the second half. Davenport kept up the pressure and it finally paid off courtesy of senior
Cam Cavanagh. He headed home the ball just below the crossbar from 15 yards straight out at 69:58 for his first goal of the season.
Brayden Texer played the ball into the air for the assist. The Panthers then got an insurance goal at 82:38 as NMU was trying to clear the ball over the end line and it was kicked into their own goal for a 2-0 lead.
Wilinski made five saves for Northern Michigan and took his first loss of the season in net (0-1).
Aaron Orban made two saves as the Wildcats did not record a shot until late in the match. The shot totals were 17-2 in favor of DU and 8-2 on goal.
