Panthers make short trip to Grand Valley State

DU will be playing their first GLIAC game on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Nate Couturier will be playing in his hometown on Saturday
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The time is now for the Davenport football team as the long-awaited chance to play in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) starts on Saturday at 7 p.m. inside Lubbers Stadium on the campus of Grand Valley State in Allendale. The task is a tall one going up against a Laker program that is among the nation's elite in NCAA Division II. No. 14 GVSU has captured 17 GLIAC titles and four national championships in their history. The Lakers will also be playing with a chip on their shoulder after a 24-20 loss at Indianapolis last Thursday (Aug. 31). It was the first season opening loss since 2014 at Asuza Pacific (26-23 double overtime). Davenport began their second season on the gridiron last Thursday as well with a 25-6 loss against Concordia (Mich.) at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. DU is now 0-2 in season openers in their brief history. The Panthers got hit in the mouth early as the Cardinals scored TD's on their first three drives. After that, the team settled in allowing just a field goal late in the fourth quarter. The offense could not gain a rhythm and were held to 142 yards on 52 plays. Joe Conner had a big day for Concordia with 170 rushing yards on 22 carries and three TD's. It was the most rushing yards and TD's allowed by a DU defense in a game to one opponent. Kye Black led the defense with 10 tackles including two tackles for a loss of 18 yards and also forced a fumble.
