GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport football team keeps putting up wins and will enter this week's game at Northwood with a 6-0 record and are 3-0 in the GLIAC. The Panthers are one of three teams in the GLIAC with a 6-0 record and are receiving votes (46) for the second straight week in the AFCA Coaches Poll. DU is also one of 17 Division II programs that are currently undefeated. The Panthers are proving to be their best in the fourth quarter having outscored their opponents by a 55-17 margin this season.
Seth Acda carried for a career-high 136 yards and set the school record with a 65-yard run at Wayne State. It is also the longest run from scrimmage in the GLIAC this season. Acda became the first Panther to rush for 100-plus yards in a game since
William Gist had 158 against McKendree on Oct. 14, 2017.
The Davenport defense continues to be one of the best in Division II through six wins this season. DU ranks second nationally allowing 20.0 percent on third down and those numbers are even stingier in the second half allowing 12.8 percent. The defense is second in passing yards allowed (123.5) and in rushing defense (57.3). In addition, they rank second in pass efficiency defense (83.38) and first in total defense (180.8). Thanks to the legs of
Nate Couturier, DU is also 18th in punt return yardage (15.43). The ball control on offense has also been top-notch ranking sixth averaging 35:26 per game.
The Panthers battled through rain-soaked conditions last Saturday night in a 37-14 win at Wayne State. It was the one and only night game on the 2018 schedule for Davenport kicking off at 6 p.m. in Detroit. The rains began just as the opening kickoff started and didn't stop until midway through the fourth quarter. There were fireworks in the first quarter as both teams scored 14 points. Wayne State had a 57-yard pass for a score, the longest play from scrimmage given up by DU this season, and a 69-yard punt return for a score. It was the first punt return for a TD given up in DU history. WSU led 14-7 after the punt return but DU answered on back-to-back TD passes from
Haiden Majewski to
Daronte Powers. The first came on fourth down for a four-yarder late in the first quarter and the second was a 12-yard slant with 2:10 left until halftime. Lightning delayed the game for roughly 35 minutes after that score. Wayne State never threatened to score after that delay. DU added 16 points in the fourth quarter as
Keion Powers and
Michael Catching each had three-yard TD runs.
