GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport football team is coming off their first loss of the season last Saturday at Northwood University (30-22). It was a very uncharacteristic game for the Panthers who had trouble stopping the run and holding onto the ball. Entering the game, DU was giving up just 54.5 yards per game on the ground. The Timberwolves option style produced 241 yards on 55 carries and three scores. DU had only yielded four rushing touchdowns in their previous six victories to start the season. DU also had 10 fumbles and lost five in their first six games, but fumbled five times and lost two at Northwood. Grand Valley State had the highly-anticipated matchup against Ferris State last week and fell 35-31 in a shootout at Lubbers Stadium in Allendale. Bart Williams threw for a career-high 487 yards and one score, but was intercepted three times with the last one coming with 2:02 left inside the Ferris State 30-yard line. Chawntez Moss carried 14 times for 37 yards, but three of those found the end zone.

Despite giving up 358 total yards against Northwood last week, the Panthers are still tops in Division II giving up 206.1 yards per game. They are leading by 12.9 yards a game over Harding and 17.5 yards a game over Minnesota Duluth. Davenport is also third nationally in third down defense giving up 23.2 percent. West Chester leads that category at 22.9 percent followed by Ferris State at 23 percent. By holding Northwood to 117 passing yards, DU now leads Division II allowing 122.6 yards per game. That will face a stern test on Saturday as the Lakers are 11th in passing yards at 304 per game with 20 touchdowns. DU's defense has allowed just six passing TD's in 2018. This matchup also features the top two red-zone defenses in the GLIAC. GVSU is allowing scores on 64.3 percent of possessions while DU is at 68.8 percent. Both teams are also very closely matched in rushing offense. GVSU is averaging 161.9 yards per game while Davenport checks in at 158.6 yards per game.

Davenport quarterback Haiden Majewski struggled with his accuracy last week at Northwood completing 46 percent of his passes. On the bright side, he still ranks fourth in the GLIAC completing 58.2 percent for the season. Brian Williams had an interception at Northwood last week (his fourth in two career games at NU) and currently ranks third in the GLIAC in interceptions per game. Nate Couturier leads the GLIAC with 17.4 yards per punt return and is one of three GLIAC players to return a punt for a score this season. Seth Acda is currently fifth in the conference in rushing yards per game (60.3) and leads the team with 422 rushing yards. C.J. Thornton has wreaked havoc in the backfield ranking fourth in the league in tackles for loss per game (1.4).
