Panthers put a scare into #8 Grand Valley State

DU fell 19-14 and had a hail mary batted down on the final play

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The crazy weather accompanied a very entertaining game on Saturday in the second meeting between Davenport and No. 8 Grand Valley State at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Lakers escaped with a 19-14 win over the Panthers after the noon kickoff was pushed back to 12:55 p.m. because of a lightning delay. Once the game got started there wasn't a great deal of offense in the first half as the Lakers led 3-0 at halftime.

Grand Valley State got the opening kickoff and drove 11 plays in 94 yards, but Jack Provencher was hit by Derrick Calloway and fumbled at the DU 3. Brian Williams recovered for the Panthers to get a huge turnover early. The next three possessions resulted in punts and then GVSU took over at their own 46 with 4:10 left in the first quarter. Chawntez Moss rushed for 32 yards on the first play of the drive and then the Lakers had to settle for a 33-yard field goal by J.J. McGrath.

The Panthers sustained a good drive which started at 8:17 of the second quarter. Haiden Majewski ran for 15 yards on the first play of the drive and then found Keion Powers for 29 yards plus a 15-yard facemask gave DU the ball at the GVSU 23. A pass interference penalty against the Lakers moved the ball to the GVSU 10. Michael Catching ran over right end but Kalen Dunham forced a fumble and Jailyn Harden recovered at the GVSU 7.

The next drive saw DU get to the GVSU 39 and another fumble doomed the Panthers as Michael Pettis caused and recovered the ball at the GVSU 47. After that fumble, the lightning appeared again and both teams went to the locker room. After 44 minutes, the teams resumed play at the 1:29 mark and Bart Williams threw an interception to Brian Williams who then coughed it up on the return at the DU 41. Daniel Jackson ended the half with a sack of Williams and seemed to hurt the signal-caller who got up gingerly.

The teams went right into the third quarter and the Lakers put it in the end zone on their first drive of the second half. Moss had a 22-yard touchdown run at the 8:39 mark for a 10-0 lead. After a three-and-out by Davenport, the Lakers drove to the DU 8 but settled again for a 28-yard McGrath field goal and a 13-0 lead with 3:35 left in the third quarter.

Davenport answered with their first score against the Lakers ever as Haiden Majewski tossed a 14-yard touchdown to Keion Powers to cap off a seven-play, 75-yard drive which lasted 3:20. DU ended the third quarter down just 13-7. Moss fumbled in his own territory at the 42-yard line to start the fourth quarter and DU took advantage. They went six plays and Majewski found Deondre Moore for a 13-yard score on a run-pass option play executed to perfection. Chris Ahmed booted the extra point for a 14-13 lead with 11:40 left in the contest.

Cole Kotopka took over primarily at quarterback for Grand Valley State and got popped on 3rd-and-15 to set up a 4th-and-one at the DU 36. The Lakers got stuffed as Moss lost a yard and Robert Clanton and Deion Powers assisted on the tackle. Grand Valley State took over at their own 18 with no timeouts and 2:53 on the clock needing a score. Kotopka and the Lakers were faced with 4th-and-15 and he completed a 24-yarder to Austin Paritee. The Lakers then faced 3rd-and-20 after a 10-yard sack by Jackson and an incompletion. DeShaun Lowery was called for pass interference allowing for a first down and the ball moving to the GV 43. Kotopka connected with Dodson for 53 yards two plays later with 1:36 to play for a 19-14 lead after a missed two-point conversion.

The Panthers had one last drive and slowly moved downfield. Majewski had a magical first down run on 4th-and-15 to the GVSU 36 and spiked the ball with six seconds left. He then lofted a pass into the end zone on the final play and it was batted away by Tyree Horton. GVSU had 396 yards including 256 passing and 140 rushing. They were 4-of-13 on third down and had eight penalties for 75 yards. DU had 325 yards including 182 passing and 143 rushing. They were 5-of-15 on third down and had eight penalties for 73 yards.

Majewski finished with 182 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 63 more yards. Williams passed for 175 yards with no touchdowns. Paritee caught seven passes for 127 yards for the Lakers. Keion Powers caught seven passes for 100 yards and a score. Jamal Veazey led DU with 11 tackles. The defense also had 11 tackles for loss and three sacks.
