CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team played at home for the final time in 2018 and ended with a 2-2 draw against Northern Michigan. The Panthers had just their first tie in GLIAC play this season while the Wildcats tied for the fifth time in league action.
The Panthers thwarted away a good scoring chance at the 16th minute as Anthony Sweier came into the box for the Wildcats, but
Eric Riley came out of goal at the right time to make a sprawling save. The Panthers then took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute as
Brayden Texer lobbed a pass inside the 6-yard box and
Matt Whelan finished on a one-touch. Whelan's sixth goal of the season was all the scoring in the first half.
Northern Michigan tied the game in the 53rd minute as a foul was called just outside the 18-yard box. Sam Popp took the direct free kick from 19 yards and put it into the top left corner for his ninth goal of the season. The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead just over seven minutes later as Popp was responsible for his second goal of the game. Lewis Murray delivered a long accurate pass to Popp who had one shot saved by Riley. However, the rebound went back to Popp who scored from around 10 yards out.
Davenport tied the game in the 77th minute as Texer passed from left wing to the middle where
Miguel Flores shot from 17 yards under the crossbar for his fourth of the season.
Tyler Welch nearly gave DU the lead with 19 seconds left on a bicycle kick that was saved by Valentin Kliebe.
In overtime, Welch looked to have the game-winner with a sharp right foot shot from around 10 yards. Kliebe reacted quickly and made a remarkable save in the 97th minute. In the second overtime, DU had one shot on goal by Whelan but that was it as the game ended in a deadlock.
