HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Davenport football team was 4:28 away from dropping their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener and ending their two-game win streak to start 2018. The plays that were not made during the 2017 season were made on this day as the Panthers came back from a 21-10 deficit in the fourth quarter to claim a 23-21 win at Michigan Tech and improve to 3-0.
Haiden Majewski and
Keion Powers connected on three touchdown passes including two in the final 4:28 including the game-winning score with just 10 seconds left on a highlight reel caliber play. DU led 10-7 early in the third quarter before the Huskies scored back-to-back touchdowns to take a 21-10 lead with 7:30 left in the game.
The Panthers answered with a drive that started with 5:08 left as Majewski completed a 12-yard pass to
Deondre Moore. Then Majewski found
Keion Powers for a 68-yard touchdown to tie the school record for longest pass and cover 80 yards in three plays. The Panthers went for two on the conversion to get within a field goal but the rush by Majewski failed.
DU's defense stood tall with a three-and-out on the next possession and called timeout with 3:00 left. DU took over at their own 23 and Majewski went to work. He found
Nate Couturier for seven yards and
Daronte Powers for 17 yards to move to the DU 47.
Seth Acda then rushed for 14 yards to the MTU 39. Acda fumbled on 2nd-and-10 at the MTU 15 but it was recovered by
Meckah Lester. On fourth-and-seven from the 12 yard line, Majewski escaped pressure and lofted a ball to the back of the end zone. Powers leaped in the air and dragged a toe inside the line for a magical moment and a 23-21 lead with 10 seconds left. MTU had one last pass fall incomplete after the ensuing kickoff started them at their own 21.
"It was a gut check game for these student-athletes," said head coach
Sparky McEwen. "It was a total team effort and was extremely rewarding at a difficult place to win. To watch these players overcome adversity in the fourth quarter says a lot about the character of our DU men!"
DU finished with 375 offensive yards including 265 through the air by Majewski. Michigan Tech gained 292 yards but just 28 on the ground. Acda rushed for 65 yards on 14 carries for DU.
Jamal Veazey and
C.J. Thornton led the defense with eight tackles. Thornton also had 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack and a forced fumble.
