GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport football team will be traveling to Quincy this week to conclude non-conference action against the Hawks. The Panthers are 3-0 for the first time in school history, while Quincy has a 1-2 record. DU is the only school this season to have wins against NCAA DII, NCAA DIII and NAIA schools. Davenport has had a three-game win streak in their brief history coming in their inaugural season of 2016. The wins came against Kentucky Wesleyan (41-7), Arizona Christian (20-7) and Saint Xavier (20-7). The Panthers have never won four straight games. Quincy is in the midst of a four-game home stretch and it will be celebrating their homecoming on Saturday.
The Panthers will be playing their third road game out of four contests this season. With the conclusion of Saturday's game, DU would have traveled 2,414 round-trip miles so far this season. The saying 'Defense Travels' is a perfect moniker for these Panthers. DU leads NCAA Division II in rushing defense (20.7 ypg) and total defense (171.3 ypg). The team is also second in pass efficiency defense (77.76), seventh in third down conversion defense (19.6) and eighth in scoring defense (10.3 ppg).
The Panthers had a flair for the dramatic in their third win of the season and their first GLIAC win ever last week at Michigan Tech. With the score 21-10 in favor of the Huskies in the fourth quarter, DU staged a comeback with back-to-back touchdown drives in the final 4:28 of the game for a 23-21 win.
Keion Powers caught two of his school-record tying three touchdowns on those drives, including a 12-yarder with 10 seconds left on 4th-and-7 to cap off a 77-yard drive in nine plays. The Panthers gained 157 of their 375 total yards on those final two drives.
C.J. Thornton was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career. Thornton made eight tackles which included 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. He also forced a fumble and broke up a pass. The defense finished with 13 tackles for loss, which is second in a game for DU.
