Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Quick ending in overtime halts full comeback

DU (1-2-1) was down 2-0 with 5:31 left before scoring twice to send the match into OT

CALEDONIA, Mich. - On a mostly frustrating night for the men's soccer team, they battled back down a pair of goals late in the second half before falling 3-2 in overtime against Southern Indiana (2-1). The Panthers had their chances but could not cash in until the 84:29 mark. Matt Whelan was taken down in the top corner of the 18-yard box and a penalty kick was awarded to the Panthers down 2-0. Senior Brogan Shrimpton took the kick and fired down the middle as the keeper dove to his right. The Panthers seemed to gain a spark and extra gear after finally breaking through with a goal.

The Screaming Eagles held DU off until the final minute, but the Panthers had one more rush in them. Daire O'Riordan took a free kick and placed it into the box from about 30 yards. The USI keeper came out to attempt to bat the ball away but overran the play. Lasse Pico Kjeldsen was 'Johnny on the Spot' and kicked a loose ball into the lower left corner with 50 seconds to go in regulation with the tying goal.

The exuberance was short-lived however as Southern Indiana scored 26 seconds into overtime. Sean Rickey scored his second goal of the game as Markus Poulsen lifted a ball into the box and Rickey beat his man to the ball and left-footed it sliding on the ground. A Panther defender was just late getting back to clear it off the goal line. Rickey got it going very early as he tested DU keeper Eric Riley with a laser shot off a turnover just 26 seconds into the match. USI had five shots, all on goal, in the first half as Rickey scored at 15:16 with an assist from Graham Miller. Miller had a short pass and Rickey dribbled into a shot that went top left corner from around 25 yards.

The Panthers had five shots in the first half but none of them were on target. In the second half, DU simply could not get a break until late in the half on the penalty kick goal. The Screaming Eagles went ahead 2-0 at 73:58 off a corner kick by Rickey. Colten Walsh trailed the play and headed the ball from the middle of the field to the top right corner from eight yards. The deficit did not deter the Panthers who got their breaks to send it to overtime. The shot totals were 14 (5 SOG) for the Panthers and 10 (8 SOG) for the Screaming Eagles. Riley made five saves for DU while Justin Faas countered with three saves for USI.
