Panthers make short trip to Allendale to tangle with Grand Valley State

Kickoff at Lubbers Stadium is set for 7 p.m.

» Davenport dug themselves a big hole last week in a 30-17 loss against Michigan Tech. The Huskies scored all 30 of their points in the first half before the Panthers turned the tide in the second half for their 17 points. Ben Hartley caught two touchdown passes and threw for another in the first half for Michigan Tech. Haiden Majewski came off the bench to throw for 178 yards and a touchdown for Davenport.

» Sophomore linebacker Liam Cavanaugh recorded a career-high 12 tackles against the Huskies. He had six solo and six assisted tackles and also recorded the team's only tackle for loss that went for minus-2 yards. Cavanaugh came into the game with just six tackles to his credit for the season.

» The Panther defense came out strong this season with 15 sacks in their first three wins. However, the last three losses have seen no sacks. In addition, DU had 34 tackles for loss in the first three wins compared to 10 tackles for loss in the last three losses.

» During the Michigan Tech game, the Panthers were able to block an extra point and punt. It was the first time for two blocks in the same game for Davenport. Brandon Mangram blocked an extra point in the second quarter and Keewone Parker blocked a punt in the third quarter which saw batted out of the end zone for a safety.

» The 30 first-half points yielded by the Panthers were the second-most for a first half. The top mark was 34 at Ferris State on Nov. 3, 2018.

» Nine different Panthers caught a pass in the loss to Michigan Tech and Nate Couturier hauled in four catches for 44 yards including his 14th career touchdown reception. Keion Powers reached a milestone versus the Huskies with his 100th career reception. He now stands at 100 catches for 964 yards and seven touchdowns.

» Davenport currently has three defensive players with 100-plus career tackles entering this week. Senior linebacker Kye Black is the all-time leader with 257. He also has 37 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks. Deion Powers has 141 tackles and ranks third on the team this season with 39. He has eight career interceptions including three this season. Robert Clanton stands at 117 tackles including 36 tackles for loss and 10 sacks.
 
» It has been a unique quarter breakdown of scoring this year for the Panthers. In the second half in particular, DU is being outscored 42-16 in the third quarter and outscoring their opponent 61-23 in the fourth quarter.

» This week's contest at No. 16 Grand Valley State will be the third meeting. The Lakers have taken both contests with a 48-0 win in Allendale in 2017 and last year's 19-14 win in Caledonia. The Panthers took No. 8 GVSU to the wire and even led 14-13 until Nick Dodson caught a 53-yard touchdown from Cole Kotopka with 1:36 left in the game.

» Grand Valley State enters this week with a 6-1 record and are 4-1 in the GLIAC. Three of their last four games have been filled with drama coming down to the final minute. They won 21-16 at Michigan Tech on Sept. 28 and scored the winning touchdown with 24 seconds left. A week later, Ashland scored 20 points in the fourth quarter and completed a hail-mary as time expired from 52 yards for the 20-17 upset in Allendale. On Oct. 12 the Lakers led 35-28 and Saginaw Valley State drove the field reaching the one-yard line. GVSU stood tall as they stopped two rushing attempts by Ryan Conklin to preserve the win in Allendale. Grand Valley State is averaging 29.7 points and giving up 16.9 points per game. They have a great balance on offense with 1,435 rushing yards and 1,592 passing yards. Austin Paritee has caught 31 of the team's 87 receptions this season for 570 yards and five scores.
