Panthers suffer first conference loss of the season

MIDLAND, Mich. – Davenport and Saginaw Valley had to move their Friday game to a neutral site, due to the Cardinals home field being damaged by the rainy weather over the past few days. The Panthers had a slight advantage, as the neutral field was turf, similar to Davenport's field at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The two teams are both guaranteed a spot in the GLIAC Tournament, but battling for a chance to host the first round instead of being on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals were aggressive and possessed the ball very well to open up the game. Because of this, Davenport was playing timid and turned over the ball a few times, leading to early opportunities for Saginaw to score. The Cardinals took advantage of a free kick, and a loose ball in front of the net was tapped in for the lone goal of the game. Following the goal, Davenport increased their level of urgency and started pushing back against Saginaw. Shots by Ashlyn Skidmore and Madeleine Zayan were on target, but saved by the Cardinals keeper.
 
Davenport had a different energy to them in the second half, putting Saginaw Valley on their heals for all 45 minutes. The Panthers recorded five shots within the opening 10 minutes, but none could get past the SVSU keeper. Every shot from Davenport was on target, recording nine shots on goal in the game. Davenport looked like the better team in the second half. However, in the end, the early goal by SVSU in the first half proved to be the difference and the Panthers lost 1-0.
 
This was the first conference loss of the season for Davenport.
