CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport football team sent out their 18 seniors in style on Saturday in a 21-14 win over Northwood. The Panthers wrapped up their home schedule against the Timberwolves and the win propels them to 4-5 overall and 2-5 in the GLIAC. DU will wrap up the season next Saturday at Saginaw Valley State with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
The seniors were a major part of today's win for the Panthers who snapped a five-game losing skid.
Haiden Majewski threw for three touchdowns and
Keion Powers caught two of them and
Nate Couturier the other. Davenport finished the game with 304 total yards and had success on the ground with 173 rushing yards. They also did a fine job on third down going 9-of-17 after coming into the game converting 29 percent for the season.
Davenport controlled the time of possession and all three of their touchdown drives covered 10-plus plays. DU held the ball for 37:04 compared to 22:56 for Northwood. The Panthers took their second possession of the game and marched 72 yards in 10 plays. They converted a fourth-and-one at their own 49 as Northwood jumped offside. Majewski tossed a 28-yard pass to
Eric Hoogland that set up DU in the red zone at the NU 7. After a delay of game penalty pushed the ball back to the NU 12, Majewski found Powers on a crossing route into space on the far sideline and Powers reached across the pylon for his first receiving touchdown of the season. DU dominated the first quarter outgaining the Timberwolves 113-8.
DU forced a three-and-out and took over with 3:10 left in the first quarter. They went on a 17-play, 70-yard drive lasting 7:48 which saw a couple of third down and fourth down conversions.
Lorenzo White carried for six yards on fourth-and-2 from the NU 33. Majewski also completed a five-yard pass to
Myles Goulbourne on fourth-and-2 from the NU 19. Majewski found Couturier over the middle with a tough catch for a 14-yard touchdown with 10:27 left in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead.
Northwood cut the lead to 14-7 with 3:02 until halftime on a 13-play, 87-yard drive which lasted 7:23. Nate Gomez completed a 27-yard pass to Alex Spicuzzi to move the ball into DU territory at the 37-yard line. Gomez also found Bryant Kieft on a 20-yard catch to the DU 1. Cashaul Goldsmith then ran in from one yard for the score. Northwood looked to cut into the lead further late in the quarter but Parker Blust missed a 41-yard field goal with six seconds on the clock.
Davenport got a big stop on defense on NU's second possession of the third quarter. The Timberwolves drove to the DU 35 and on fourth-and-3 came up a yard short on a pass from Gomez to Christian Martinez.
Jalen Robinson made the tackle to end the drive. Davenport took over and started moving the ball on their best possession of the second half. It was a 15-play, 67-yard drive that lasted 8:09 and was capped off with a one-yard TD from Majewski to Powers on a route into the right flat. The Timberwolves got a stop of their own on defense in the fourth quarter with 4:44 remaining. They drove 55 yards in five plays to quickly cut the score to 21-14. Gomez found Spicuzzi for 33 yards on the far sideline with 3:07 to play.
Davenport killed some clock on their next drive after recovering an onside kick at the NU 46. They forced NU to call their timeouts before handing the ball over with 32 seconds left at the NU 33. The Timberwolves used a hook-and-ladder play to reach the DU 48. Three straight incomplete passes would end the game and Robinson knocked down the final pass around the 10-yard line.Â
