Panthers advance to championship game in Notre Dame 7’s

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Davenport was on the road again this week as they traveled a varsity and JV team for this tournament. The two teams each got to play three pool play games, with the red team (JV) earning a consolation game and the white team (varsity) advancing to the semifinals and championship game. The Panthers red team had their hands full, as they went 0-3 in pool play and lost their consolation match. The Davenport white team had a solid showing, but fell just short of their goal for the weekend. The team defeated Purdue 36-0, Iowa 19-10, and then Michigan State 37-0 all in pool play. The Panthers then faced Indiana in the semifinals and beat them 45-5 before facing Notre Dame in the championship game. Davenport fell 22-19 on a last second try by the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame took an early lead of 12-0, then DU struck back just before half to make it 12-5. The Panthers came out of half and tied it 12-12 quickly, eventually taking a 19-12 lead. When the Panthers kicked it off, following the try, Notre Dame took the ball 80 meters untouched to close the gap 19-17. With no time left on the clock, Davenport was trying to clear the ball out of harm's way to seal the victory, but ball handling mistakes and poor tackling led to a Notre Dame score.

"It was a very disappointed squad of Panthers, but a lesson well learned for when we head into postseason play." – Head Coach Greg Teliczan.
