HOW IT HAPPENED
The starters were announced, the ref blew the opening whistle and just 167 seconds later a goal was scored. Fortunately for the Panthers, DU was on the scoring end of the deal. Redshirt senior
Katherine Steiner gathered a ball played by
Cassandra Bosworth and beat the Upper Iowa keeper to give Davenport an early 1-0 lead.
Samantha Beckles had a busy half in the net. The freshman keeper stopped five shots by the Peacocks to help DU head into halftime with the lead.
In the second half Davenport put pressure on Natalie Rudrud, the Peacocks keeper. Shots from
Sarah Possett,
Ashlyn Skidmore, and
Alexa Dekam were on target, but five saves from Rudrud kept the score at 1-0. The Peacocks had an opportunity to score late in the game, but Beckles came up with a huge save. A ball was crossed in from the right side of the field and a shot from Jayna Morikawa was heading into the left corner of the net. Beckles, made a diving effort to stop the goal and save the game with less than one minute to play.
