MIDLAND, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team got a spark on Friday afternoon with their first win of the season at SVSU. That confidence continued into Sunday with a 1-0 win at Northwood to improve to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC. DU and Northern Michigan are the only 2-0 teams in the league at the moment.
COACHES CORNER - CHRIS HUGHES
"It was another great effort from the team against a good Northwood squad. Both teams battled hard throughout the game.
Daire O'Riordan and
Eoin Broughan were very good on the day. Our backline along with our goalkeeper,
Joshua Doupe, kept a shutout and clean sheet. Playing at Northwood is not an easy environment. We will celebrate today and begin prep for Parkside and Northern Michigan tomorrow. Getting six points on the weekend on the road is brilliant."
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- The back-to-back shutouts are the first since the 2016 season when the Panthers beat Lawrence Tech (Nov. 5) and Marygrove (Nov. 9).
-
Joshua Doupe got credit with another shutout and made three saves in the win. He lowered his season goals-against average to 0.67 and has 16 saves this season.
- O'Riordan led the team with five shots and had two on target.
- Davenport broke through in the 74th minute as
Miguel Flores scored his second goal of the season and during the weekend.
Evan Marquess delivered a left-footed pass into the 8-yard box and then Flores charged the goal and headed it in below the crossbar. Flores entered the game off the bench and scored just over a minute into entering the game.
- Davenport held a 13-11 edge in total shots and 5-3 in shots on goal.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Panthers (2-3, 2-0) will not have it any easier when they return home next weekend. DU will host Parkside (2-3, 1-0) on Friday night at 7 p.m. The teams split a pair of games last season with both teams winning on the road.
