GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport women's tennis program had a great opportunity to host the 2019 ITA Midwest Regional over the weekend. The event took place Friday through Sunday at three different locations including MVP SportsPlex, Gainey Athletic Complex and the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on campus.
Willemien Coetzee squared off with Ivona Gorgioski of Michigan Tech in the first round of singles and fell 6-2, 6-1. Coetzee went into the consolation bracket and fell 6-2, 6-2 to Katie Bell of Hillsdale.
Vladislava Shumilova played in the "B" draw of singles and dropped the first set 6-1 and trailed 1-0 in the second set before retiring with an injury.
Danica Malan had a hard-fought, tough-luck loss in her first singles match. She went three sets against Maria Ugarte of Drury with scores of 6-3, 4-6, 10-3. She then took care of business in the first consolation match with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Aubrey Smith of Bellarmine. Malan also won again in the round of 16 consolation against Silvia Verebes of Ferris State (6-4, 6-2). Her journey ended in the quarterfinals falling to Nicole Beidacki of Walsh (6-4, 6-2).
Adeline Nelson competed in the "B" draw and won 7-5, 5-7, 10-7 against Liana English of Cedarville. Maja Kozerski (Bellarmine) then played really well in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nelson.
Emma Philippus ran into a buzzsaw in her first match of "B" draw singles falling 6-0, 6-0 against Tanja Skalda of Wayne State. She also fell 6-0, 6-0 against Clara Drasch of Walsh.
Lillian Mouw also dropped a pair of matches in the "B" singles. Leticia Lunge (Missouri-St. Louis) won 6-0, 6-0 in the first match. Mouw then fell 6-1, 6-1 against Channing Varnum of Bellarmine in consolation.
Sophie Gossett had one of the best singles matches in the opening round but was clipped in three sets against Tatum Matthews of Hillsdale (7-6, 2-6, 12-10). Sophie Davis of Lewis in the consolation round beat Gossett in another three-set match (6-4, 4-6, 10-6).
Malan and Shumilova dropped their first doubles match 8-2 against Alma Abazi and Yu-Ning Lee of Drury. Gossett and Philippus lost 8-1 in the "B" draw against Helena Colvee and Georgina Cupper of Maryville.
Nelson teamed with Coetzee and they won their first match in the "B" draw by a score of 8-1 over Johanna Frye and Madelyn Groulx of Ferris State. Those two could not survive the next round however against Dominika Bobik and Lauren Opalewski of Michigan Tech (8-1).
Malan and Shumilova in the consolation dropped a 6-4 decision against Ashley Long and Lucia Pineiro of Illinois-Springfield. Gossett and Philippus lost 8-1 in the consolation match to Helena Colvee and Georgina Cupper of Maryville.Â
Nelson and Coetzee regrouped to defeat Frye and Groulx again in consolation (8-1) and lost 8-1 against Bobik and Opalewski.
