HOW IT HAPPENED
The setting was cold and rainy at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex, which resulted in a low scoring game. The ball skipped around the field during the first half. Each team recorded two shots on goal, with
Allison Luurtsema and
Ashlyn Skidmore recorded the shots for Davenport.
In the second half, Davenport got off to a quick start, recording a pair of shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes of play. The defense held strong throughout the half, not giving up a single shot on goal to the Cardinals in the entire 45-minute period. Since neither team scored during 90-minutes of regulation, overtime was needed.
The overtime period did not last very long, as Saginaw Valley State scored six minutes into the game. A shot deflected off the crossbar and a SVSU player made it to the loose ball first, tapping the ball into the net for the win.
