Panthers conquer two of three opponents over the weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was a very busy home weekend for the men's tennis team against three regional opponents. On Friday, the Panthers dropped a 4-3 decision to Illinois-Springfield. On Saturday, it was a 4-3 win over Walsh. On Sunday, it was the same result with a 4-3 win over Southern Indiana. A very intense weekend for the team who is now 7-1 overall this season.
 
The kickoff to the weekend on Friday started well with DU gaining a point in doubles by winning two of the three matches. Juan-Louis van Antwerpen and Juan Jose Pino Contoleon combined for a 7-5 win at one doubles over Menno Servaes and Tomas Martinez. Remy Johansen and Jonathan Bulmer also won at two doubles by a 6-3 margin over Rafa Rojas and Matt Lapsley. Daniil Khitrou and Matthew Leatherman narrowly lost 7-6 (7-4) at three doubles against Oscar Toro and Alex Chan.
 
The Prairie Stars won four of the six singles matches to pull away for the 4-3 win. UIS won two of the three matches in three sets. Servaes defeated Johansen at one singles (1-6, 7-6, 6-2). Martinez at two singles defeated van Antwerpen (6-3, 1-6, 6-1). Bulmer and Khitrou each got wins at three and four singles respectively. Bulmer won 6-1, 6-2 over Chan and Khitrou won 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 over Lapsley. The deciding matches at five and six singles saw Rojas win 6-1, 6-3 over Contoleon and Toro defeat Max Hartman 6-2, 6-3.
 
Davenport rebounded the next day with a big 4-3 win over Walsh. It was a clean sweep in doubles for the Panthers to gain a point. The matches were competitive with van Antwerpen and Contoleon winning at one doubles 7-5. Johansen and Bulmer picked up a 6-4 win at two doubles. Khitrou and Leatherman won 7-6 at three doubles.
 
The teams split the six singles matches with Davenport winning at two, three and four singles. van Antwerpen defeated Clemens Wagner in three sets (6-1, 6-7, 7-6) at two singles. Bulmer won 6-0, 6-4 at three singles over Dawson Drummond. Khitrou at the four spot won 6-1, 6-3 over Alex Medina.
 
The Sunday match against Southern Indiana was another dogfight. The Screaming Eagles took a 1-0 lead by winning both number one and two doubles. Khitrou and Leatherman salvaged a win at three doubles by a 6-3 score over Preston Cameron and Kooper Falkenstein.
 
Johansen set the tone in singles at the one spot with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Yahor Bahdanovich. The next win for DU came at two singles by van Antwerpen who won 7-5, 6-2 over Marvin Kromer. The match was tied at 3-3 and came down to the final match at four singles. Khitrou pulled out a three-set win over Lucas Sakamaki (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).
