INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Davenport wrestling team went up against some of the top programs in NCAA Division II on Saturday as part of the Greyhound Duals hosted by the University of Indianapolis. The team took to the mat against the host Indianapolis in the first matchup followed by eighth-ranked Tiffin and finally second-ranked McKendree.
The Panthers fall to 1-5 in dual matches this season with losses to UIndy (47-0), Tiffin (33-15) and McKendree (41-3). The host Greyhounds took all 10 individual matches with three of those by fall. Robert Altland had a fierce competition at 133 pounds in a 2-0 loss to Chase Wilkerson.
Joey Orr also hung tough in his match at 149 pounds before falling 4-1 against Kyle Barkovich.
River Fox at 285 pounds had a very close match and in the final minute the tie was broken in a 3-2 loss against Jeremy Splix.
The Tiffin matchup started beautifully for the Panthers as they took the first two matches for a 9-0 lead.
Daniel Poupore got a massive win by fall in 1:48 at 125 pounds over Nathaniel Stubblefield. Altland followed that up getting three points with a 4-2 decision at 133 pounds over Richetshaye Puente. The Dragons then started to control the match by winning the next six bouts. Two of those were by fall and the others were not close.
Aaron Martin come through at 197 pounds with a win by fall in 4:14 against Nicolas Smythe. Fox ended the dual with a 5-1 loss at 285 pounds against David Henson.
The McKendree matchup saw the one win for Davenport come at 197 pounds as Martin continued his good day with a 9-4 win over Ty Osby. Fox had another tight one with a 3-2 loss to Vinnie Scalelta at 285 pounds. One other match of note was 125 pounds as the second-ranked wrestler at that weight class in Marcus Povlick of McKendree won by fall in 1:17 over Poupore.
