The Davenport women's basketball team will be looking to shake off a pair of road losses at Northwood to open the season as they entertain Wayne State University inside the DU Student Center this weekend. The Panthers played the Timberwolves tough for six of the eight quarters at Riepma Arena in Midland, but those two quarters told the story. On Friday, DU was outscored 37-16 in the third quarter and on Saturday they opened the game down 31-2 after the first quarter.
The team took many positives from the weekend series and will look to battle against a Warrior squad that opened the season at home with two convincing wins over Lake Superior State. On Monday, Wayne State won 75-52 over the Lakers and used a 25-4 edge in the third quarter to pull away after a halftime score of 31-31. Grace George poured in a game-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. In all, 10 different players scored in the contest for the Warriors. On Tuesday, WSU once again used a strong third quarter to separate themselves. LSSU was down 33-32 at the break before the Warriors outscored them 26-14 in the third quarter. They would go on for the 79-61 victory. Sam Cherney dropped a game-high 22 points to go with nine boards and five blocks. She was 11-of-14 from the floor in her 25 minutes of action. George notched 21 points and had 12 rebounds to complete the double-double.Â
This will be the seventh and eighth all-time meetings against the Warriors who own a 4-2 advantage over the Panthers. The last meeting happened on February 8, 2020 with DU claiming a 74-63 win in Grand Rapids. Jenna Falkenberg recorded her 23rd career double-double on senior day in the win with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
