Panthers drop home opener to Wayne State

Toni Grace paced the Panthers with 13 points

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball team hosted Wayne State in their home opener on Friday evening. The Panthers were looking for their first win of the new season but ran into a hot shooting Warrior team from the outside. Wayne State much like the first two games against Lake Superior State used a strong third quarter to open up a big lead. The Panthers battled in the first quarter and trailed 18-13. The Warriors extended their lead to 43-29 at halftime and shot 7-of-12 from behind the arc in the first half. WSU went 4-of-5 from deep in the second quarter alone.

In the third quarter, the Warriors did not cool off as they shot 11-of-20 from the floor including 5-of-9 behind the arc and took a 72-42 lead into the fourth quarter. Davenport was able to get a lot of younger players extended minutes in the fourth quarter which should only help their depth moving forward in the rugged GLIAC.

Toni Grace led the Panthers with 13 points and it was the 18th time in her career to lead the team in a game. Grace went 5-of-10 from the floor and made both of her free throws. Grace also had three rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes.

Scout Nelson chipped in 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor. Nelson also had three rebounds and one assist in 27 minutes. Davenport shot 28.4 percent for the game and made 15-of-18 at the free throw line.

Wayne State finished 50.8 percent from the floor including 12-of-21 from the arc and 13-of-15 at the foul line. Rebecca Fugate scored a game-high 24 points going 8-of-13 from the floor including 4-of-8 behind the arc. Grace George scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 25 minutes. One of the most telling stats was that Wayne State scored 30 points off turnovers compared to just 13 for the Panthers.

These two teams will play again tomorrow (Jan. 16) at 1:00 p.m. at the DU Student Center.
